Free Bird, 2020, oil and mixed media on prepared paper, 11x15"
This painting was part of a group developed during Covid of plants, people, animals, anything I was sharing a space with while at home for months on end. I started looking closely with wonder at everything - even more than before - and was captivated by the blue in the black bird’s wings.
Maybe it was my imagination, but I think a black bird and I developed a routine in the mornings. I sat on the back deck with coffee and a sketchpad, and he watched. Maybe it wasn’t even the same bird each day, but I like to think it was. During an unpredictable time, it was nice to have a small predictable routine with the natural world.
Additionally, this piece references birds - and people - in cages, as my mind was turning over government actions at the US southern boarder that included separation of parents and children and putting people in cages. Those subtle references are embedded in the background layers of the painting.
