This painting, started in 2014 during my final year of grad school at UA Little Rock nagged at me from storage for years. Hidden away, I knew that large piece encompassed elements important in my painting practice: the presence of figures, missing information, abstract areas, and drawn, unpainted forms to contrast painted shapes.
The contrasts have been intriguing to me for years, creating a sense of mystery and opportunity for the viewer to “fill in” the picture. But I knew it was incomplete. Not in the incomplete way I was aiming for, but more like incomplete in the execution…it was too empty. Finally! I woke up recently and realized what was needed: added color and a few carefully placed added details (like the balls in the fair stall). The intention color repetition is like a game, tying the pieces together and guiding the eye.
